Feeding the Hungry

Mothers in Guatemala need so much support.... I watch their worn faces and see the worries they have of 'how do I feed my children their next meal, let alone next week!'  This pot of food hopefully will feed several hungry families of Dads, and all the children and last.... the mothers themselves.  Each bowl is carefully poured out... no mistakes can be made.  Every mouthful counts!!!    Water has been added as much as possible to make it stretch, so it ends up being watery but at least it's soup for the day.

And so sadly.... for thousands across Guatemala it will be the only meal of the day! Dads have to eat first, as they are the ones out trying to bring in some sort of substance for their families.  Children next.... as they are deeply loved (as all parents do) and the moms will eat whatever is left. They will put themselves last never thinking of themselves in their devotion to care for their families.

A hard way to go

As you can see here, there is no sides or even shoulders of the highway to walk along.  It’s very dangerous here at night as people are literally walking in the dark back to their homes.  They use only the passing traffic headlights to see where they are going.  These women carry sticks for fuel to make meals with.  Walking alongside modern cars, the poverty stricken must still cook on outside fires for their daily food. And they are not young women - but often the older women who still bear the burden of hard physical labor 7 days a week.

I have never had to cook a single meal that started by me carrying a load of wood.  No, it's jump in the car and run over to the shops and gather food to take home and cook.  Mom's Against Hunger cares about these women and their children in Guatemala who still live without proper modern helps.

Babies travel

 

A Guatemalan mother carried her newborn on her back as closely covered as possible as she walks along the highway. The danger which blows dirt and debris at her with every rushing  truck and car that passes put her and her baby at risk.  She has no car, nor even a bicycle to ride, so she walks.  Her baby protected only by the blanket in which she is held tightly to her mother’s back.  She knows no other life, so assumes this is perfectly fine. 

Misery

 

I can’t help but see the misery written on the faces of these children.  It’s chilly and they have no coats.   The little burro carries the items that they are supposed to sell at market.  But they have stopped to rest alongside the road.  These young children  should not have the weight of the world upon their little shoulders but they do as they must do all possible to help their family survive.  Few children have the privilege to attend schools in Guatemala.  It costs too much, and they must help feed the family at home.
