FLOOD-RAVAGED Fiji is bracing for more bad weather as a tropical depression tracking towards the main island of Viti Levu is expected to intensify and turn into a cyclone.
A state of natural disaster has been declared for most of Fiji's Western Division after heavy flooding killed four people and forced thousands into evacuation centres.
A tropical cyclone alert was issued by Fiji's Meteorological Service overnight.
A gale warning is in force today, with damaging winds likely to hit Viti Levu in the next 12 to 24 hours as the weather system, currently over Vanuatu, intensifies and moves southeast towards Fiji, the Fiji Village website reports.
More heavy rain and squally thunderstorms are also expected, with the possibility of more severe flooding of major rivers, streams and low-lying coastal areas.
Most of Viti Levu is without electricity and rotating power blackouts are in place to allow most industries to operate during the day and domestic users in the evening.
Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Information Sharon Smith-Johns told Radio New Zealand there are about 5000 people in evacuation centres.
Four people have died as a result of the flooding, Ms Smith-Johns said.
Fiji meteorological service forecaster Terry Atalifo said the rain is expected to continue for another few days, which will only make flooding worse.
He said this is one of the worst floods to hit Fiji.
